Erfurt - a medieval city with timber-framed houses, an important logistics location

Erfurt
Erfurt
I have visited Erfurt on a Saturday in August 2011 with my German language class organised by DAAD; at that time I was staying in Leipzig.

The programme of the tour with the DAAD group was: "90 Minuten Stadtführung durch die Altstadt mit der Krämerbrücke, dem Rathaus, dem Universitätsviertel und dem Dom St. Marien, Spaziergang auf den Petersberg mit wunderschöner Aussicht auf Erfurt, parallel zum Spaziergang besichtigt jeweils eine Gruppe die Gloriosa, Glocke des Erfurter Doms."

Comment from my close girlfriend: "You look so cute.. I love this style. It suits you most , I think :-)" :x

"Together with the neighbour-cities Weimar and Jena it forms the central metropolitan area of Thuringia with approximately 500,000 inhabitants. Notable institutions in Erfurt are the Federal Labour Court of Germany, the University of Erfurt and the Fachhochschule Erfurt as well as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erfurt with the Erfurt Cathedral as one of the main sights. Further famous buildings are the Krämerbrücke, a bridge completely covered with dwellings, and the oldest Synagogue still standing in Europe, established in 11th century. Furthermore, the medieval city centre consists of old timber-framed houses and about 25 gothic churches." (source: wikipedia). The reason that I created this post about Erfurt, even my visit was already quite long time ago, is because I recently travel more often to the neighbour-city Weimar due to my research work. From Erfurt to Weimar by train it takes probably only 15 minutes. Weimar is a small but interesting city with much history, cultural and past political importance. I will also write about Weimar soon in another post, and I think it is a good idea to know about these both nice cities nearby each other: Weimar and Erfurt.
